The Maktub Shawl is a roomy, comfortable piece: it sits beautifully on the shoulders and is easy to style—over a coat when you’re heading out, over a dress, or with a simple t-shirt. It’s one of those pieces that works in every season.
It was a very special collaboration with Mariana Fontana (@corazondvellon), who showcased it at Barcelona Knits. The piece you see in the photos travelled with us to the festival and was made by Celeste (@celecuervita), a tester for the design.
Made in crochet, it brings texture and structure together in a very organic way for the maker: it has rhythm, repetition, and still keeps your interest throughout the project.
The yarn: Merino de la Patagonia DK
For this version we chose Merino de la Patagonia DK, dyed with yerba mate.
It’s a traceable Patagonian merino wool, sourced from flocks managed under animal welfare and environmental regeneration standards. We spin it in small batches at our wool mill, with a firm twist that gives excellent stitch definition while preserving the softness of the fibre.
In this design, the combination of technique and yarn results in a shawl with a beautiful drape and structured, yet flexible and easy to style in different ways.
The dye: yerba mate
There’s one dye that keeps coming back to our dye pots: yerba mate. 🌿
It’s a regional plant rich in tannins. It’s incredibly generous with color and never stops surprising us, offering a palette that can move from soft greens to warm yellows—and sometimes shift into more greyed or earthy brown tones.
The piece in the photos is made with Merino de la Patagonia DK in the colourway Pastizal Pampeano. Each dye bath is slightly different, and that subtle variation is part of the beauty of working in small scale with botanical dyes.
