Algodón del Litoral is agroecological cotton sown under the principles of biodynamic agriculture
In 2022, a batch of ginned cotton came into our hands, grown on properties of indigenous communities in Campo Medina, Punta del Indio in Chaco, Argentina. It has been sown under the principles of biodynamic agriculture, which not only takes into account the biological care of the soil but also astronomical events. Those who cultivate do so following a calendar based on the movement of the stars, using seeds without genetic modification and reserving water from rain for its production. Free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
Algodón del Litoral
A spinning mill in the province of Buenos Aires, to which we were able to tell this story, decided to process the fiber against all economic convenience. They understood the importance of preserving what was pure and natural, and after a general cleaning of the machines that took days, they worked on this small batch.
This production marks the beginning of our journey in the agroecological cotton production value chain in Argentina, bringing this fiber that is so healthy for the skin, the planet, and local communities, to knitters around the world.
Today, we can enjoy a collection of skeins of this agroecological cotton dyed with natural colors, thanks to the empathy of the entire production chain.
Sistemas agroecológicos
The concept of agroecology has been evolving over the years, and today there is a consensus that it is more than just ecological practices.
Agroecology is a paradigm that promotes the design and management of economically viable, socially just, and environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems, characterized by greater socio-ecological resilience and aimed at strengthening the good life of the entire society.
Production systems that do not use chemical synthesis inputs or genetically modified organisms or are generated from gene editing are considered agroecological and gradually, comprehensively, and sustainably apply a series of principles that ensure the well-being of producers and soil health.
